Mohit Sharma to Join CSK as Bowling Coach for IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings are set to bring back former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their bowling coach for IPL 2027, with new head coach Zaheer Khan recommending him for the position. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that Mohit will join the coaching staff, replacing Eric Simons as the franchise reshapes its support team.
The appointment marks Mohit Sharma’s return to Chennai Super Kings, this time in a coaching role. He previously spent four seasons with the franchise as a player and became one of the key Indian fast bowlers in the side during the MS Dhoni era.
Mohit Sharma Set to Become CSK Bowling Coach
The move is the first major addition to Zaheer Khan’s support staff since he replaced Stephen Fleming as CSK head coach.
According to Times of India, Zaheer recommended Mohit for the bowling coach position, with the decision subsequently confirmed by Kasi Viswanathan. Mohit will take over from Eric Simons, who had worked as CSK’s bowling coach during the previous coaching setup.
The appointment also fits the direction of CSK’s coaching restructure. Zaheer has been given responsibility for building his support staff, and further appointments are expected as the franchise prepares for the 2027 season.
The Chennai Super Kings IPL 2027 team page will track the wider coaching, squad and player developments around the five time IPL champions.
Why Zaheer Khan Chose Mohit Sharma
Mohit’s biggest advantage is his familiarity with both CSK and modern T20 bowling.
He played for the franchise across four seasons and developed his reputation as a versatile pace bowler capable of operating with the new ball and later in the innings. His slower balls and variations became particularly useful as his IPL career progressed.
That experience could be valuable for a CSK bowling group that Zaheer wants to develop under a new coaching structure.
Zaheer himself was a world class fast bowler and has considerable experience mentoring bowlers. Rather than taking complete control of the bowling unit, he is now bringing in a specialist who has first hand knowledge of the demands of IPL cricket and the CSK environment.
The Indian Express also reported that Zaheer’s decision to appoint Mohit represents his first significant support staff move after taking charge.
Mohit Sharma’s Previous CSK Connection
Mohit’s connection with CSK goes back to the 2013 IPL season, when he emerged as an important part of the team’s bowling attack.
He enjoyed an outstanding IPL 2014 campaign, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket taker with 23 wickets for CSK and winning the Purple Cap. The official IPL record books list him as the 2014 Purple Cap winner.
His CSK career also included appearances during the franchise’s successful period under Dhoni. Cricbuzz records that Mohit took 20 wickets in his debut IPL season in 2013 before improving to 23 wickets in 2014.
That makes his return particularly relevant for a franchise that has historically placed considerable value on bowlers who understand the conditions in Chennai and the team’s tactical approach.
Mohit Sharma’s India and IPL Record
Mohit finished his playing career with substantial experience across international and franchise cricket.
| Career area | Mohit Sharma |
|---|---|
| IPL matches | 120 |
| IPL wickets | 134 |
| India ODIs | 26 |
| ODI wickets | 31 |
| India T20Is | 8 |
| T20I wickets | 6 |
| IPL 2014 wickets | 23 |
He represented India at the 2015 ODI World Cup and took 13 wickets across eight matches during the tournament. His international career ended with 34 appearances across ODIs and T20Is.
Mohit retired from all forms of cricket in December 2025 after his final IPL appearance for Delhi Capitals during the 2025 season. His move into coaching now gives him a route back into the IPL less than two years after ending his playing career.
What Mohit Sharma’s Appointment Means for CSK
The bowling coach appointment is significant because CSK are entering IPL 2027 with a very different coaching structure.
Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise has ended, while Zaheer has been brought in to oversee a new phase. The change follows three successive seasons without a playoff appearance, making the support staff another major part of the rebuild.
Mohit’s role could therefore extend beyond simple bowling drills. His own career was built around pace variations, change ups and death bowling, areas that can be especially important in T20 cricket.
His previous experience with CSK also means he already understands the franchise’s working environment, dressing room culture and expectations.
Who Else Could Join CSK’s Coaching Staff?
Mohit is the first major addition confirmed under Zaheer, but the coaching structure is not yet complete.
The Indian Express reports that Zaheer is still working on the remainder of his staff, with an overseas candidate being considered for the batting coach position. Assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are also expected to continue.
That leaves the CSK coaching setup with several potential developments still to come ahead of IPL 2027.

CSK Coaching Staff 2027: Current Status
At present, the key confirmed change is straightforward.
Zaheer Khan is the new CSK head coach, while Mohit Sharma is set to become the franchise’s new bowling coach.
The batting coach position is still being worked on, and further support staff appointments are expected in the coming weeks.
The return of Mohit also gives CSK a former player with a strong franchise connection at an important point in their rebuild. His experience as a powerplay and death overs bowler, combined with his knowledge of the IPL environment, will now be transferred to the coaching side.
CSK’s preparations for IPL 2027 are therefore already taking shape, with Zaheer Khan making his first significant move in rebuilding the backroom team.
