Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL 2027: Squad Status, Captain and Auction Needs
Sunrisers Hyderabad have signed Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis from Chennai Super Kings in a completed four-player trade for IPL 2027. Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards move to CSK in return. Khaleel joins at ₹4.8 crore and Ellis at ₹2 crore, adding to the earlier confirmed arrival of T Natarajan from Delhi Capitals.
SRH finished third in the IPL 2026 league stage with 18 points before losing the Eliminator to Rajasthan Royals. Their powerful batting core remains the foundation, while Natarajan’s return adds an experienced death-bowling option. The final IPL 2027 squad will be settled after further trades, retentions and the December mini auction.

SRH 2027 Squad Status
The list below uses SRH’s 2026 auction squad as a starting point and incorporates the completed DC and CSK trades. It is not the final retained squad for IPL 2027.

| Pace and seam options | Pat Cummins, T Natarajan, Khaleel Ahmed, Nathan Ellis, Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Eshan Malinga, Sakib Hussain, Praful Hinge, Onkar Tarmale, Brydon Carse, Shivam Mavi |
| Other bowling option | Amit Kumar |
David Payne, Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan Madushanka and RS Ambrish joined through 2026 injury replacements. Their previous-season appearances do not establish retained contracts for 2027.
Pat Cummins Is the Current SRH Captain
Pat Cummins remains the captain shown on the IPL team profile. He missed the first seven matches of IPL 2026, when Ishan Kishan led the side in his absence. Cummins returned for the second half, so Kishan’s spell was an interim arrangement.
Abhishek Sharma served as vice-captain during that phase. Any 2027 leadership change should only be treated as final after the franchise announces it.
Daniel Vettori is the current head coach. The 2026 support group included Simon Helmot, Hariesh Jaikumar, Varun Aaron and Muttiah Muralitharan. Support roles may change before the season.
What the 2026 Season Revealed About Hyderabad
SRH did enough over 14 league games to finish third with nine wins, five defeats and 18 points. Their +0.524 net run rate placed them behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, who also collected 18 points. Hyderabad then conceded 243 for eight in the Eliminator and were bowled out for 196 in 19.2 overs.
Hyderabad won five matches in succession during the middle of the season, then closed the league stage with victories over Chennai Super Kings and RCB. The run showed that the side could recover from a mixed start.
The sharper lesson came in the knockout. Rajasthan’s 243 showed that a wicket-taking attack still needs a reliable way to slow a batting surge.
The Batting Core Is Already Strong Enough to Build Around
Heinrich Klaasen led SRH’s 2026 run chart with 624. Ishan Kishan scored 602, while Abhishek Sharma added 563. Together, the top three produced 1,789 runs. Only 61 runs separated first from third, evidence that the scoring load was genuinely shared rather than carried by one standout batter. Travis Head contributed 410 and Nitish Kumar Reddy made 302, giving Hyderabad five batters above 300 for the season.
SRH were not dependent on one batter. Head and Abhishek attacked the powerplay, Kishan covered the top order and wicketkeeping, Klaasen supplied middle-order hitting, and Nitish offered an Indian seam option.
Livingstone and Edwards have left, while Ellis joins the overseas pace options. Head, Klaasen, Cummins, Kamindu Mendis and Eshan Malinga remain in the historical player pool, subject to retention decisions. Khaleel and Natarajan provide Indian left-arm pace without occupying overseas places in the XI.
The Bowling Numbers Point to the Real Auction Decision
Eshan Malinga took 20 wickets in 2026, the most for SRH. Sakib Hussain claimed 15 and Praful Hinge took 14. Their combined 49 wickets gave Hyderabad a young pace group with genuine wicket-taking value. Shivang Kumar added nine, while three players finished with eight wickets each.
Cummins played seven matches and took eight wickets. Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat brought experience, but the playoff showed how quickly a game can escape without a dependable control option. Hyderabad must decide whether their Indian quicks can fill that role for a full season.
Ansari’s departure leaves a gap in SRH’s domestic leg-spin options. Amit Kumar and left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey remain among the reference group, but Hyderabad must assess the middle overs combination alongside Natarajan’s addition to the pace attack. The IPL 2027 auction will offer another opportunity to address that balance.
SRH confirmed IPL 2027 trades: arrivals and departures
Sunrisers Hyderabad completed a player trade with Delhi Capitals on October 14, 2026, bringing back T Natarajan for ₹5 crore and sending leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari to DC at his existing ₹40 lakh contract.
Natarajan represented SRH from 2020 to 2024 and claimed 19 wickets during IPL 2024, the most by any Hyderabad bowler that season. Delhi Capitals subsequently signed him for ₹10.75 crore at the 2025 auction.
His return at a revised ₹5 crore fee gives Hyderabad an experienced Indian left-arm seamer who can bowl yorkers and pace variations during the final overs.
The trade also changes SRH’s spin depth. Ansari’s departure removes a domestic leg-spin option, leaving the franchise to assess its remaining spinners before the IPL 2027 auction.
| Player | Movement | League fee |
|---|---|---|
| T Natarajan | Delhi Capitals to Sunrisers Hyderabad | ₹5 crore |
| Zeeshan Ansari | Sunrisers Hyderabad to Delhi Capitals | ₹40 lakh |
| Liam Livingstone | Sunrisers Hyderabad to Chennai Super Kings | ₹6 crore |
| Jack Edwards | Sunrisers Hyderabad to Chennai Super Kings | ₹3 crore |
| Khaleel Ahmed | Chennai Super Kings to Sunrisers Hyderabad | ₹4.8 crore |
| Nathan Ellis | Chennai Super Kings to Sunrisers Hyderabad | ₹2 crore |
The exchange is officially confirmed, unlike speculative reports involving other IPL players. Full terms and player backgrounds are covered in the Natarajan and Zeeshan Ansari IPL 2027 trade report.
What Natarajan’s Return Changes for SRH’s Bowling Attack
Natarajan joins a bowling group containing Eshan Malinga, Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Sakib Hussain and Praful Hinge from the previous season’s squad.
His biggest advantage is providing an Indian left-arm pace option without occupying an overseas slot. That gives SRH more flexibility when selecting Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and other overseas players.
However, his previous success does not guarantee a starting position. Hyderabad must still decide how to distribute powerplay and death overs among its available fast bowlers.
With Ansari moving to Delhi, domestic leg-spin depth becomes a clearer auction question. SRH can strengthen their pace attack through Natarajan while separately assessing whether another specialist spinner is needed.
Three Priorities for the IPL 2027 Auction
A bowler who can stop a high-scoring over from becoming a collapse
Khaleel, Ellis and Natarajan give SRH additional pace options before the auction. The next decision is how to divide powerplay and death overs among those arrivals and the existing bowlers. Spin depth remains a separate question after Ansari’s departure and Livingstone’s move to CSK. Follow the auction guide for vacancies after retentions.
Indian depth that keeps the overseas combination flexible
Head, Klaasen and Cummins can occupy three overseas places. A reliable Indian spinner or seamer would leave the fourth slot available for conditions and form.
A contingency plan for the top order, not a replacement for it
Klaasen, Kishan and Abhishek all crossed 500 runs in 2026. A domestic reserve who can open, keep wicket or bat at number four would offer cover without disturbing that core.
Home Matches in Hyderabad
Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is Sunrisers Hyderabad’s home ground. The venue connects the franchise to Hyderabad and the Orange Army, but the exact 2027 home fixtures and match times will only be clear when the match list is released.
10 March to 15 May is the proposed IPL 2027 window. SRH’s opponents, home dates and start times remain pending. The IPL 2027 schedule will carry the confirmed fixtures, while the points table will track results once matches begin.
SRH History in One View
Sunrisers Hyderabad joined the IPL in 2013 and won their first title in 2016, defeating Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final. They returned to the final in 2018 and again in 2024. Deccan Chargers’ 2009 title belongs to the earlier Hyderabad franchise and should not be added to SRH’s trophy count.
SRH’s modern batting identity is built around Head and Abhishek in the powerplay, followed by Klaasen’s middle-order hitting. Their 287 for three against RCB in 2024 remains the franchise’s highest total. The 2027 challenge is to match that scoring power with better bowling control.
