Mumbai Indians IPL 2027: Squad, Captain and New Coaching Staff
Mumbai Indians enter IPL 2027 with Kieron Pollard as head coach and a new coaching staff featuring Robin Uthappa, Mitchell McClenaghan, T Dilip and Dhawal Kulkarni. MI confirmed the four specialist appointments on October 30, 2026, following the departures of Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson.
MI finished ninth in IPL 2026 with four wins from 14 matches. Hardik Pandya remains the latest officially listed captain, but Mumbai have discussed a trade with Punjab Kings and Rohit Sharma’s return to the captaincy has been reported. Neither a completed Hardik transfer nor an official captaincy change has been announced.

The appointments are official and separate from pending player retention and captaincy decisions.
Has the Mumbai Indians 2027 squad been announced?
The table uses Mumbai’s 25-player squad assembled after the 2026 auction, rather than combining that squad with every injury replacement. It remains a reference list pending retention decisions.
| Role | MI 2026 auction-baseline players |
|---|---|
| Batters and wicketkeepers | Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, Robin Minz, Sherfane Rutherford, Danish Malewar |
| All-round options | Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir, Will Jacks, Mitchell Santner, Corbin Bosch, Shardul Thakur, Raj Angad Bawa, Atharva Ankolekar, Mayank Rawat |
| Bowlers | Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, AM Ghazanfar, Mayank Markande, Ashwani Kumar, Raghu Sharma, Mohammad Izhar |
Krish Bhagat, Keshav Maharaj, Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir joined through 2026 replacement signings. Their contracts need to be distinguished from the original squad when the 2027 lists are announced. Hardik has not completed a trade, and Rohit’s reported captaincy return has not been officially announced.
Why IPL 2026 changed Mumbai’s 2027 priorities
Mumbai’s 2026 season was not a narrow playoff miss. The team finished ninth with eight points and a net run rate of minus 0.584. Four wins in 14 games produce a win rate of only 28.6 percent.
| IPL 2026 measure | Mumbai Indians result |
|---|---|
| Matches | 14 |
| Wins | 4 |
| Losses | 10 |
| Points | 8 |
| Net run rate | minus 0.584 |
| Total runs scored | 2,553 |
| Total wickets taken | 75 |
| Leading run scorer | Ryan Rickelton, 448 runs |
| Leading wicket taker | AM Ghazanfar, 15 wickets |
Mumbai scored heavily in some matches, including successful chases against Kolkata, Lucknow and Punjab, but could not repeat that level often enough. Injuries also interrupted the preferred combination.
The fall was sharp because MI had reached Qualifier 2 in 2025. The 2026 finish also extended their title wait to six seasons after the 2020 championship. For 2027, continuity only makes sense if the roles around the senior core are made clearer.
Will Rohit Sharma return as MI captain?
Rohit’s captaincy return has been reported, but Mumbai Indians have not announced the appointment. Hardik remains the latest officially listed captain while his trade discussions continue.
The captaincy decision is separate from the confirmed coaching appointments. Pollard is head coach; the Rohit captaincy report covers the leadership discussions and the Hardik trade update covers his possible transfer.
Mumbai Indians Coaching Staff for IPL 2027
Kieron Pollard is Mumbai Indians’ head coach for IPL 2027, supported by Robin Uthappa as batting coach, Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach, T Dilip as fielding coach and Dhawal Kulkarni as development bowling coach. All five positions have been officially confirmed.
Pollard was promoted from batting coach on October 24, 2026, following Mahela Jayawardene’s departure. Mumbai announced the four additional appointments on October 30.
MI Coaching Staff 2027: Confirmed List
| Coach | IPL 2027 role | Previous experience |
|---|---|---|
| Kieron Pollard | Head coach | MI player and batting coach |
| Robin Uthappa | Batting coach | Former India batter and IPL champion |
| Mitchell McClenaghan | Bowling coach | Former MI fast bowler and MI Emirates coach |
| T Dilip | Fielding coach | Former India men’s fielding coach |
| Dhawal Kulkarni | Development bowling coach | Former MI and Mumbai fast bowler |
The official Mumbai Indians announcement confirms the coaching structure.
Robin Uthappa Returns as MI Batting Coach
Former India batter Robin Uthappa replaces Pollard in the batting-coach position.
Uthappa represented Mumbai Indians during IPL 2008 before playing for several other franchises. He won the IPL 2014 Orange Cap with Kolkata Knight Riders and was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
At MI, his responsibilities will include developing batting skills, improving tactical decision-making and helping players adapt to modern T20 cricket.
Mitchell McClenaghan Appointed Bowling Coach
Former New Zealand left-arm fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan returns to Mumbai Indians as bowling coach.
He represented MI from 2015 to 2020 and was part of four IPL championship-winning squads. He also previously served as bowling coach for MI Emirates.
McClenaghan takes over the bowling department after the departures of Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey.
T Dilip Takes Over as Fielding Coach
T Dilip has replaced Carl Hopkinson as Mumbai Indians’ fielding coach.
Dilip previously worked with India’s senior men’s team and was part of the support staff during India’s victories at the 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup.
His appointment brings recent international coaching experience to MI’s fielding department.
Dhawal Kulkarni Named Development Bowling Coach
Dhawal Kulkarni has joined Mumbai Indians in a dedicated development bowling role.
Unlike McClenaghan, who leads the IPL bowling department, Kulkarni will support young Indian fast bowlers through a year-round development programme.
Kulkarni previously represented MI across two spells and was part of the franchise’s 2013 and 2020 title-winning squads.
This gives Mumbai a more structured approach to developing bowling talent beyond the IPL season.
Which Mumbai Indians Coaches Left Before IPL 2027?
The new appointments follow four confirmed coaching departures.
| Departing coach | Previous role |
|---|---|
| Mahela Jayawardene | Head coach |
| Lasith Malinga | Bowling coach |
| Paras Mhambrey | Bowling coach |
| Carl Hopkinson | Fielding coach |
Jayawardene departed on October 17. Malinga, Mhambrey and Hopkinson left on October 29.
Pollard’s promotion and the four October 30 appointments have now filled the announced senior coaching positions.
The Kieron Pollard head coach appointment provides more detail about his promotion and previous association with Mumbai Indians.
What Mumbai Indians need from the 2027 mini auction
Mumbai do not need a complete rebuild. Their Indian core already covers batting, pace bowling and leadership. The mini auction should fix specific weaknesses rather than collect overlapping names.
A reliable bowling plan beyond Jasprit Bumrah
Bumrah remains Mumbai’s most important fast bowler, while Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar provide new-ball options. AM Ghazanfar led MI with 15 wickets in IPL 2026. New bowling coach Mitchell McClenaghan will help manage the attack’s preparation, while development bowling coach Dhawal Kulkarni will work on strengthening young Indian bowling options throughout the year. The final combination will depend on player availability and the IPL 2027 retention and auction decisions.
Clear overseas roles in the starting eleven
Ryan Rickelton was MI’s leading run scorer in 2026, while several overseas players competed for four places. The final squad needs clear separation between wicketkeeping, pace, spin and all round roles.
Batting support when the senior core misses matches
Rohit, Suryakumar, Tilak and Hardik form the central batting group, but injuries and uneven form exposed the next layer in 2026. MI need enough Indian depth to avoid changing the entire combination when one senior player is unavailable.
Availability, not reputation alone
Mumbai’s 2026 injury problems make availability part of recruitment. Backup players should cover defined roles rather than add another well known name.
Wankhede Stadium and the Mumbai Indians home schedule
Wankhede Stadium remains Mumbai Indians’ home ground. Its short boundaries, sea breeze and evening conditions influence how teams use pace, spin and power hitters.
Mumbai’s IPL 2027 home and away fixtures have not been announced. Wankhede remains MI’s home ground, but the match schedule will establish the dates, opponents and start times in IST.
Mumbai Indians title record
Mumbai Indians have won five IPL championships: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.
MI followed a 2025 playoff run with ninth place in 2026. Their next step depends on squad balance and player availability, not the historical trophy count.
